Amy is an accounting professional at a fast-paced privately held company.  She is responsible for many critical tasks related to servicing outside investors as well as regular accounting and reporting procedures. In addition to financial management, transaction integrity, and overall efficiency, the mandate to expense equity compensation (FAS123R) has added additional complexities to the monthly financial process. Today the executive management team is needing a capitalization table for each of the past  four fiscal quarters and details on the various rounds of preferred equity financing in preparation for a meeting with the board. Her current method of using spreadsheets to manage all these processes is taking too much time to administer and the files are getting more complex and harder to audit, not to mention she’s currently the only person that knows how the spreadsheets work. What Amy doesn’t know is that she inherited several of these financial models from her predecessor who lacked the attention to detail to avoid several hidden formula problems. Amy cannot take a vacation when any of these tasks must be performed and she worries that they are getting too complex to delegate. Oh, and next week the auditors will be in….
